You are building great habits! I worked for a small literary publisher in Toronto in the 2000s. I made $26k (Canadian dollars). I was very frugal but still had fun and managed to save. Because of those habits I was eventually able to buy my own flat just 20 mins commute into London, England without family help or a husband! I didn’t work in publishing at that point but I would never trade those early years working in my dream job, even if it was for peanuts.
Hey this Substack is great. It lands in my inbox and I open it immediately because it's so useful. I love the shout out to your parents for supporting your dream, and their amazing example of teaching you to save. I didn't spend my twenties this way (I had a great career but I also had very sick relatives to support so things went the opposite way for me) but I'm really glad that you are doing so well so soon in life. Thank you for sharing! Bx
this made me really nostalgic for when I got my first job out of college in NYC in the early 2010s-- I know it was a different era and easier in a lot of ways, but the lifestyle you described was very much mine that first year or two and I was freakishly happy to just be at the party, working an interesting job in an incredible place. it's a really special time!
This is so inspiring! We do something similar in our marriage especially now that we have a baby and want to keep all our ducks in a row to save more for our children

I love this. It sounds like you have a good grasp on how to live. Enjoy your lifestyle instead of chasing someone else's. Good luck.

How helpful, down to earth, practical, and humane. Thank you for sharing.
